DryadUK WP1: Establishing and using a UK mirror site for Dryad
Status: This page is outdated and of historical use only.
This page describes work done by the DryadUK project from 2010 to 2011.
Task list
Steps completed:
- BL will have a base machine up
- BL node installed and tested
- DNS routing tested (European traffic goes to BL, all other traffic goes to NCSU)
- Modified submission system so submit button/links always go to US node
- Footer display of node name (users can tell which node they are connected to)
Steps remaining:
- Enable stats/logging at BL, so we can display combined access statistics
- Failover testing
- Enable DNS redirection for production system
Hardware
The BL node is a virtual server running Linux (what flavor?).
Minimum specifications:
- 2 processors
- 4GB RAM
- 1TB disk
Steven Lilgert will work on installation of the node. Primary administration will be performed by BL, with help from NESCent.
Software
The multiple nodes will appear as a single system. Everything will stay datadryad.org -- emphasizing the international nature of the project. Users may see a message in the page footer to tell them which node is currently connected.
- DNS "nearest server" load balancing will need to be set up, possibly using a service like ZoneEdit.
Modifications to submission system for BL node:
- Phase 1: Submission, curation at US only
- Phase 2: Testing of transatlantic transfer rates -- submission to a BL site vs submission/curation at a US site. Assignment of appropriate DOIs (US/UK) based on journal.
- Phase 3: (likely not in this grant) Full submission at both US and BL, with bidirectional sync.
Failover process
- UK: failover for access (submission would require a more complex setup)
- US: will develop failover between NCSU and NESCent for submission
