Dryad is both a repository and an organization. The organization consists of an international consortium of stakeholders, including journals, publishers and scientific societies, and provides a forum for all stakeholders to set priorities for the repository, participate in planning, and share knowledge and coordinate action around data policies. Dryad endeavors to ensure that all stakeholders are both contributing to and receiving the benefits of data archiving.

Publishers, societies and journals can become Dryad partners through membership in Dryad; we are in the process of incorporating as a not-for-profit organization in the US and details will be finalized and publicized here soon. Dryad members will receive a discounted rate for data deposits, select the Board of Directors and receive the benefits of participation in membership forums. Annual membership dues of $1000 USD will help defray the communication and meeting costs associated with a large membership-based organization. For information about Dryad's Cost Recovery Plan, see [[Business Plan and Sustainability]].

== Interim Governance (2009-2012) ==
From 2009 to early 2012, the Dryad Board operated under an [[Media:Governance_for_dec_meeting.pdf|Interim Governance Agreement]]. This agreement specified that the Dryad Board consists of one appointed representative from each Partner Journal, and each Partner Journal has one vote in matters brought to the board. The full board elected an executive committee of five journal representatives, including the project director, who serves ''ex officio''.  The executive committee was authorized to make most decisions on behalf of the full board, but issues regarding partner financial commitments and governance must be brought to the full board.
