Mission and vision statement

The mission of Dryad is to promote the availability of data underlying findings in the scientific literature for research and educational reuse. The vision of Dryad is a scholarly communication system in which learned societies, publishers, institutions of research and education, funding bodies and other stakeholders collaboratively sustain and promote the preservation and reuse of data underlying the scholarly literature.


Dryad is governed by a twelve member Board of Directors, elected by its Members. Dryad is currently applying for status as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit to be incorporated in North Carolina, USA. For more information, please see Business Plan and Sustainability.


Members may be independent journals, societies, publishers, research and educational institutions, libraries, funders, or other organizations that support Dryad's mission. Benefits of membership include electing the Board of Directors, a discount on service fees, a voice in in membership forums, and participation in a network for knowledge exchange among diverse stakeholder groups. The (proposed) annual membership dues are $1000 USD.

Board of Directors

  • Theodora Bloom: Theodora Bloom left laboratory science after a PhD in developmental biology and a postdoctoral fellowship in cell and molecular biology, and has for the past 20 years worked as an editor and publisher at Nature, Current Biology and more recently the commercial open access publisher BioMed Central and non-profit open access publisher the Public Library of Science (PLoS). As Biology Editorial Director at PLoS she has responsibility for the journals PLoS Biology (for which she is Chief Editor), PLoS Genetics and PLoS Computational Biology, and takes the lead for PLoS on issues around data access and availability. She also serves on the Advisory Board of OpenAIRE/OpenAIREplus.
  • Lee Dirks: Lee Dirks has a 20+ year background in information management in a number of different fields, but has spent his last 15 years at Microsoft and the most recent 5.5 years in Microsoft Research focused exclusively on improving the scholarly communication process. The team that Lee is in charge of is chartered with engaging with the academic and scientific community to transform the research process and to create free tools and resources to speed this transformation. With a background as an academic librarian and more recently as a technical evangelist, Lee has an global network of colleagues across the academy and the high tech industry.
  • Liz Ferguson: Liz Ferguson has worked in journals publishing for the past 15 years. The last eight of these have seen her lead the Blackwell (now Wiley-Blackwell) program in whole organism biology, and most recently she has worked to develop and launch the Wiley Open Access program.
  • Simon Hodson: Simon Hodson has led JISC's Managing Research Data Programme since early 2009, a large strategic investment to improve UK Higher Education's capacity to manage, curate, preserve and reuse the data which underpins research findings. Simon has a strong research background, as well as considerable project and programme management experience; he sits on numerous project Steering Boards and strategic Working Groups in the area of research data, and served for two years on the Conseil Scientifique of the French TGE-Adonis initiative.
  • Marcel Holyoak: Marcel Holyoak has been on the executive board of Dryad since 2010, with the aim of promoting data archiving within ecology so that ecologists may catch up with evolutionary biologists. He is currently Professor, Department of Environmental Science and Policy, University of California, Davis , and Editor-in-Chief for Ecology Letters, and taught a workshop on data archiving at his university last year.
  • Brian Lavoie: Brian Lavoie, Research Scientist at OCLC Research, has many years of research experience in digital preservation, and writes and speaks frequently on the topic. In addition to co-founding the initiative that produced the PREMIS Data Dictionary, which became the de facto standard for preservation metadata, he has special expertise in the economics of long-term digital curation, serving as the co-chair of the National Science Foundation’s Blue Ribbon Task force on Sustainable Digital Preservation and Access.
  • William Michener: Bill Michener is active in the both the environmental and information sciences and has directed several large interdisciplinary research programs and information technology projects including the U.S. National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Biocomplexity and Ecology Programs, the Development Program for the NSF-funded Long-Term Ecological Research Network, and numerous infrastructure projects that focus on developing information technologies in support of the sciences, including the ongoing Data Observation Network for Earth (DataONE). He has extensive experience in project management, meeting facilitation, and service on non-profit Boards (e.g., Organization for Tropical Studies, Cornell Lab of Ornithology) and Editorial Boards (e.g., Ecological Society of America Ecology Board member and Editor of Ecological Archives, Associate Editor for Ecological Informatics).
  • Allen J. Moore: Allen Moore has been a Professor of Evolutionary Quantitative Genetics at the University of Kentucky, the University of Manchester (UK), the University of Exeter (UK) and now at the University of Georgia. He is a past Secretary of the Society for the Study of Evolution, and served on the editorial board of The American Naturalist, as well as an Editor of Animal Behaviour. He was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Evolutionary Biology for the past 4 years, and is now the founding Editor-in-Chief of Ecology and Evolution, an open-access online journal.
  • Susanna-Assunta Sansone: Susanna Sansone has twelve years’ experience in project management focusing on curation, ontologies, and software for data management. She has developed a significant expertise in the area of standardization for the purpose of enabling reporting, sharing and meta-analysis of biological, biomedical and environmental studies. She is a central player in the grass-roots data standardization movement and her activities are around and in support of the biocuration activity and its pivotal role in enabling reproducible research, driving science and discoveries. In particular, she is co-founder of the MIBBI and BioSharing initiatives, Board Member of several standardization initiatives, including the Genomic Standards Consortium, the F1000Research Advisory Board and the iCommons’ Board of Directors.
  • Eefke Smit: Eefke Smit, Director of Standards and Technology at the International Association of STM Publishers, in The Hague, has more than 25 years experience in the publishing industry and early-on involved in web-initiatives. Recent projects include several EU-studies and recommendations for better integration of research data and publications (ODE, APARSEN, PARSE.Insight) and participation in several working groups for Best Practice Guidelines on how to handle data and data citation (DataCite, Codata, WDS, NISO/NFAIS).
  • Todd Vision: Todd Vision has a research background in evolutionary genetics and bioinformatics, and more recently has investigated various aspects of scholarly communication in science. He has served as the Associate Director of Informatics at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center since 2006 and, in that position, has helped steer a wide variety of community-oriented informatics capacity-building programs, including Principal Investigator on the primary NSF grant funding Dryad since 2008. He is currently a member of the NSF Advisory Committee on Cyberinfrastructure.
  • Michael Whitlock: Michael Whitlock is an evolutionary biologist and population geneticist at the University of British Columbia. He is a former Editor-in-Chief of The American Naturalist, where he helped initiate the joint data archiving policy.

Interim Governance 2009-2012

From 2009 to early 2012, the Dryad Board operated under an Interim Governance Agreement. This agreement specified that the Dryad Board have one appointed representative from each Partner Journal, and each Partner Journal has one vote in matters brought to the board. The full board elected an executive committee of five representatives, including the project director, who served ex officio. The executive committee was authorized to make most decisions on behalf of the full board, but issues regarding partner financial commitments and governance were brought to a vote before the full board.
