Search Results Mockups

Second Round

1. Search results #1

The tabs serve as a special kind of default filter. The filters on the left would be applicable to the result set of the specified tab (so the name filter on the left isn't for that person across all target repositories).

"Search results" would indicate (in addition to the selected tab) which set was being displayed and paging controls would be on the top right. The blue should be green to match the rest of Dryad's link color scheme.

2. Search results #2

The second image just shows a non-Dryad tab selected. The "Search results" now includes text indicating that these are TreeBASE results being displayed; still hit counts on tabs and paging to upper right.

3. Search results #3

Last image includes page navigation at the bottom in addition to the upper right.

Comments:

  1. I like having the extra links for paging at the bottom. This makes me think, though.... by far the most common action is "Next Page". It would be useful to make the "Next Page" link at the top larger (similar to the one at the bottom in this mockup). I'm not sure whether the "Previous Page" should be larger, though, since that is used less frequently.
  1. How about at the top: Page: < Previous 1 2 3 ... 11 Next > (with the "Next >" and "< Previous" as the hyperlink (so it's larger and easier to hit)). --Kevin Clarke 13:58, 18 August 2010 (EDT)

Second Round Discussion

Hilmar questions the GenBank tab. All tabs should have the same meaning; GenBank is different because we're not importing all the metadata associated with records that have a publication (like we are with TreeBASE); Hilmar suggests a "perform this link at GenBank" link instead of putting these results in a tab. If did have a tab it should be labeled differently ("GenBank in Dryad" for instance) but this is still misleading because a user may say "Why did I find 138 links for GenBank but find a lot more when I search GenBank directly."

Paging looked fine; there was general agreement with Ryan's comment about making the Next and Previous links in the upper navigation section easier to click ("< Previous" and "Next >" perhaps instead of just "<" and ">"). There was also general agreement that the facets would apply to which ever tab was selected (they are not facets across all the results -- the tabs are serving as default facets, one of which is always in effect). They are a special class of facet. Mark Diggory is interested in discussing this with us so that he can feed our input back into the next dev cycle of the discovery system.

We had decided last meeting not to have an "all" tag. Todd had said showing all together won't serve much purpose because they are different kids of resources and one might vastly outweigh another in the results. We'll keep them as separate tabs.
